The son of a Liverpool-based printer, John Southward (1840-1902) was a prolific writer and editor of books on the subject. He edited the Printers' Register from 1886 to 1890, and his Modern Printing: A Handbook remained a standard work for apprentice printers and compositors well into the 20th century. This dictionary of terms employed in printing offices was one of his earlier works, initially issued as a monthly serial within the Printers' Register. The resulting high demand led to the publication of a second edition in book format in 1875. Painstakingly compiled, it covers the history and practice of typography, and gives references to other works where further information can be found. Over a century later, the technology and terminology of typesetting and printing have undergone enormous changes, but this book shows the British printing industry in the mid-to-late 19th century.

Philip Luckombe, printer, author & shell-collector, published this work in 1771. (He had published a shorter version, A Concise History of the Origin & Progress of Printing, anonymously in the previous year.) Born in Exeter, he learned the printing trade there, & became a freeman of the city in 1776, but moved to London, where he wrote travelogues & several books on printing, edited dictionaries & encyclopaedias, & became an authority on shells. The first part of the book is concerned with the history of printing, including the various charters issued to the Stationers' Company, & the second with the practicalities of 'the art and mystery of printing' & 'the necessary materials used in a Printing House', including typefaces, presses & paper, & the duties of a warehouseman. This technical information continued to be used & quoted until the middle of the twentieth century.

University Librarian at Cambridge from 1867 until his death, Henry Bradshaw (1831-86) had inherited from his banker father an important library of Irish printed books and pamphlets assembled in the early nineteenth century. Having added to it, Bradshaw generously presented the collection to the University Library in 1870, and it has been expanding ever since. Published in 1916, this three-volume catalogue was compiled by the bibliographer Charles Edward Sayle (1864-1924). The works listed here, numbering more than 8,000 items and dating from the early seventeenth century through to the late nineteenth century, represent a valuable resource for students of Irish history and printing. Sayle's catalogue reveals the breadth and richness of the collection at the time of publication. Volume 3 contains the index to the catalogue as a whole.

This study focuses on the spread of print in colonial India towards the middle and end of the nineteenth century. Till the first half of the century, much of the print production in the subcontinent emanated from presidency cities such as Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, along with centres of missionary production such as Serampore. But with the growing socialization of print and the entry of local entrepreneurs into the field, print began to spread from the metropole to the provinces, from large cities to mofussil towns. This Element will look at this phenomenon in eastern India, and survey how printing spread from Calcutta to centres such as Hooghly-Chinsurah, Murshidabad, Burdwan, Rangpur etc. The study will particularly consider the rise of periodicals and newspapers in the mofussil, and asses their contribution to a nascent public sphere.
